Suanne Li is the artist behind the gorgeous origami-like creations of Paper Displays of Affection.
She daylights as a real estate consultant in New York City, loving the amazing variety of food shops you can find in the City and enjoying the cheap ‘n’ chic clothing solution that New York offers to wannabe shopaholics. But the way she expresses her creativity and love for cute things is by making these incredible and colorful origami, which she then transforms into lovely and unique jewels.
Not to mention the fact that she also writes about food, on her Chic Peas blog.
And, just so you know, her Paper Displays of Affection line is not new to good press buzz, having already been featured by Country Living Magazine (which my mom loves) and Better Homes & Gardens… now, Suanne and her world are on NUOK, for your own and exclusive enjoyment.
:: Why and when did you started Paper Displays of Affection? I started Paper Displays of Affection when I started my first job after college. I discovered I had a lot more free time than I was used to and I had a successful following on DeviantArt.com (DA). After making a few sales to people on DA, I realized I had the wherewithal to do something bigger than make pretty things, and Paper Displays of Affection was born!

:: Where do you get your inspiration from? I get my inspiration from a lot of places. Some days its “I have nothing that matches this outfit” or “what can I make with something like XYZ?” Some days its just a beautiful piece of paper. I also find that I get custom orders for people who have really cool visions and I love putting things together for them!

:: Who is your ideal buyer? I imagine my target market to be confident women, who love color and are a little sophisticated – but not so sophisticated that they can’t have fun! Ladies who like to make a scene, if you will…
:: What is your favorite NYC place? Ohhhh goodness. This is hard! I am going to go with the Chikalicious Dessert Bar on 10th St between 1st and 2nd Ave. They have fantastic gourmet desserts with fresh ingredients and they’re super friendly. I’m also a huge fan of the New York Public Library in Bryant Park and the Museum of Natural History. But give me a free few hours and most likely you’ll just find me wandering the streets looking at anything and everything!
:: Do you think New York can still be considered the place-to-be for young creatives? I think everyone should try New York once! I can’t imagine living anywhere else to be honest. There are so many things to see and experience every day that you can’t help but be inspired. I do agree it can be expensive, but there is no place like New York!
:: Where do you shop in NYC? If we’re talking food: Despana, Whole Foods, the Union Square Farmer’s Market, and Chinatown. As for supplies: Kinokuya Japanese bookstore, Kate’s Paperie, and the beads stores from 33rd to 39th along 5th Ave. Finally for clothing: Banana Republic, Zara, and Loehmann’s (business formal offices stink by the way). I have a million little places I love too!

7. If I say Italy, you say…? mozzarella di bufala! I’m a big eater, but I especially love Italy because I’m saving my first trip there to be a month-long honeymoon trip… whenever I find Prince Charming and get married that is.
