:: Why and when did you start RouDesigns? We first published our shop on Etsy at the very end of 2008. We started because we were looking for a market, as well as more publicity for our production. We think Etsy provides a great opportunity for this.
: Where do you get your inspiration? Rouska: From the audience and the opportunity to be able to make a high quality, uniquely designed product for the middle market. Roussina: Now more than ever, from what the future has to offer. Every time I think about design, I think in terms of solving a problem and making things better from what they used to be, more user friendly, beautiful, providing us with a better experience. I strongly believe objects we use on a daily basis should also make a bold aesthetic statement.

: Who is your ideal buyer? Rouska: The one with taste. Roussina: The one who knows what he/she wants and can afford it.
: What is your favorite NYC place? Rouska: I really enjoy visiting MOMA on Friday afternoons. The interior space on the main floor and the garden. You can sit and look at people who have come from all over the world to visit and enjoy the museum. The whole world moves in front of you and around you, people from every country and you can hear them speaking their languages, dressed in the latest fashion and all around you there is art, inspiration, sculptures, and color. It is where I re-charge my energy and ideas. Another favorite place of mine is Columbus Circle, the Borders book store and of course The Museum of Art and Design. Plus it is just steps away from Central Park. This is a small part of my New York. Roussina: Long Island City, the neighborhood right by our studio, the brand new boardwalk by the Pepsi sign.

: Do you think New York can still be considered the place-to-be for young creatives? Rouska: Although very expensive, New York City is and will always be an attractive place for young people. Roussina: Let me start by answering this question with a question: What do you mean by still? Hasn’t it always been? Just the fact that this “still”, this ever so slight doubt exists now in your question, says so much about New York, doesn’t it? It tips the scale a little bit, when in fact there is no doubt New York STILL is the place to be. So, I guess my answer is: Yes – if you can afford it. If I compare today with stories I have heard about the past – no doubt NYC may have lost a big part of its truly creative spirit… So I don’t know, perhaps it is not such a creative city as it used to be, but perhaps it is more creative than ever… However, I think New York shouldn’t be the only place-to-be for young creatives. I mean there are great many cities to be in for someone who wants to be creative. Where you are is not who are and a person can maintain their creativity regardless of their current location. Just think of Berlin, London, and Tokyo, Brazil… And whatever happened to Paris…? Bottom line is, New York will always be New York, and it will always be the city to make it in. The place where you can meet everybody, piled up together from every corner of the globe. And the city where every day is a new day. In my opinion, you can’t honestly say that about any other city, so I guess this is what makes it the-place-to-be.

: Where do you shop in NYC? Rouska: Columbus Circle. Roussina: Anywhere there’s a sale.
: If I say Italy, you say…? Rouska: The best contemporary design in the world, Faenza, Grottaglie, Taranto, Ciro Fornaro, great music: Rita Pavone, Adamo and many others. Roussina: It is never just one thing that comes to mind when I think of Italy. But from the top of my head: Great automobile design, fashion, soccer, great food, and wine.
