Today in New York: Gabe Molnar

Gabe Molnar is the creator of this super cool New York based company called 1AEON. 1AEON started printing shirts in 2004 and became very popular with the one-of-a-kind, multi layered hand silkscreened, colorful tees, which are so awesome that some of them also glow in the dark. Sold in several stores from NY to Tokyo, 1AEON‘s tees are inspired by mythological and futuristic imagery and its mission  is to “beautify” the world and to make us buy and wear organic and eco-friendly and feel-good products.

But Gabe is not only a tee-maker, he is also part of a heavy rock band, the Sleep To Death. That’s why I am pretty sure you’ll appreciate even more his advice on where to lounge and listen to good music in NYC…

:: Why and when did you started 1AEON? When i learned how to silkscreen form a friend, i figured i could print on fabrics and printed tees were one of my favorite american symbols. I figured there is a lot i can do with it and i tried, it worked. It was about 5-6 years ago.

:: Where do you get your inspiration from? I get inspirations from my dreams, daydreams, imaginations, “compose” in the shower.. or I would start thinking about something before i go to sleep and have a clear idea of what to do next when i wake up. I always work on some ideas and I constantly write down things, and make lists.

:: Who is your ideal buyer? It would be anybody who likes the designs and feel of the shirt as much the style, fabric and cut. I either make crazy complex designs with lot of little details or something simple and bold. I normally repel anything cute and cheesy, I thrive on something hard hitting and provocative.

:: What is your favorite NYC place? I love that place called Lit Lounge on 2nd. Ave between 5th and 6th. It’s a classic NY venue. Kind of small. Nothing beautiful, but just what I have always seen in movies, plus I play there sometimes with my band, Sleep to death.

::Do you think New York can still be considered the place-to-be for young creatives? Most definitely, If a day walking around the city won’t do anything for you, I don’t know what will. I have been around in a few places, but nothing like New York. Not to mention Etsy is from here. Times are changing but so is the city. I recommend it 100%.

:: Where do you shop in NYC? Well i get a lot of things online, but there some great organic stores, markets in my neighborhood in Park Slope, Brooklyn, such as the uber known Food Coop.

::If I say Italy, you say…? Beautiful women, culture, history, tomato, bread, cheese, temper, fast talking. I’ve been in Rimini, Ravenna, Bologna, Venezia, and I still remember the sun and great beaches, and a taste of the salt.. Amazing!
