Pop ha prodotti davvero belli e originali, sia per donna che per uomo, a ottimi prezzi ($ 30- 80), la qualità è buona e i capi sono quasi sempre creati da giovani stilisti statunitensi. Da Pop troverete camicie, pantaloni, magliette, cappotti, occhiali, accessori e scarpe. Ma il pezzo forte di Pop sono i vestitini, adorabili. (Attenzione può causare shoping-dipendenza). Se cercate qualcosa di più sofisticato ecco Pema, nel cuore di Bedford Avenue. I prezzi sono un po’ più alti (dai $50 in su) ma il rapporto qualità prezzo resta buono. Oltre all’abbigliamento, Pema ha una vasta selezione di gioielli e accessori, un ottimo luogo dove comprare un regalino per mamma o sorella o fidanzata. Indirizzo: 225 Bedford Avenue

Se invece siete alla ricerca della scarpa trendy, Shoe Market is the place to be! Scarpe per uomo e donna di varie marche, dalle Toms alle Camper, Hugs ma anche le richiestissime svedesi Hasbeens.

4) BEACON’S CLOSET – abbigliamento uomo e donna usato e vintage

Ci sono tanti negozi di vintage a New York, ma spesso sono troppo cari. Preparatevi ed entrate in questo gigantesco negozio di vintage armati di tempo e pazienza. Beacon’s Closet è un megastore dell’usato, scarpe, abbigliamento, oggettistica, tutto diviso per genere e colore. Si trovano capi di ogni periodo e marca a prezzi stracciati, un paradiso per gli amanti del vintage. Indirizzo: 88 N. 11th St.

5) STELLA DALLAS – abbigliamento uomo e donna usato e vintage

Stella Dallas è più decentrato, ma se vi piace spulciare tra magliette anni ’80, vestitini degli anni ’60, cravatte psichedeliche anni ’70, vestitoni dei balli studenteschi anni ’50 e roba roba roba di ogni genere, fatevi un giretto in questo negozione. Indirizzo: 285 N. 6th St

La vetrina è un’attrazione di per se, con una rappresentazione in miniatura di un allegra fattoria di pecore, capre, mucche e di tutti gli altri animali che producono latte e derivati.

Entrando verrete inondati da un’odore (o puzza a seconda dei vostri gusti) di formaggio stagionato, e vi troverete davanti ad una gamma di latticini abbastanza impressionante. Gli amici cheese snob americani mi hanno detto che c’è da leccarsi i baffi. I ragazzi del Bedford Cheese sono molto simpatici e disponibili e sapranno consigliarvi il formaggio giusto per ogni vostra esigenza.

Io però mi dirigo quasi in apnea sempre verso la ricca selezione dei biscotti del Mulino Bianco, che nonostante i diecimila negozi italoamericani della zona, si trovano solo qui.
E spostandosi all’angolo opposto del negozietto c’è l’area salumi e paté, la mia preferita.
Troverete Prosciutto di Parma, San Daniele, vera Mortadella, vero Prosciutto Cotto (non quel concentrato di polifosfati che è l’Ham americano), paté francesi e italiani di ogni genere, squisiti ovviamente, e una panetteria con baguette buonissime e croccantissime.

Il Bedford Cheese Shop è il luogo ideale per comprare prodotti buoni, autentici e per viziarsi un po’ quando la mancanza del cibo italiano si fa insostenibile, una fetta di prosciutto di Parma tagliato sottile, un pezzo di parmigiano o una mozzarellina credetemi può sembrarvi il paradiso.

:: Why and when did you started Plum Pretty Sugar? Plum Pretty Sugar Loungerie lived in my heart for some time before pouring out and over. It was a journey of sorts… a mutation of lessons learned, life changes, heartbreak and inspiration. Like a dream I pieced together in order to find my path, my truth. Throughout this there was this idea of how I wanted to feel…  the carefree-ness of breezy happiness, of cozy comfort and with an ease of living beautifully, inspired and with heart. From there came Plum Pretty Sugar.

:: Where do you get your inspiration from? The idea of inspiration is so interesting me… the deep down feeling of what inspires me and not someone else. I suppose it is that sort of eclectic thinking that moves me. And so to be moved… gosh… it is color, especially in dreams, art, nature. Night-blooming flowers, fashion photography or just a feeling that bubbles up.

:: Who is your ideal buyer? I like to think that Plum Pretty Sugar speaks to most women. And while not every woman sees the same thing, I think that most find it spirited, heart-full, feminine, maybe bohemian, maybe ethnic, maybe 70s hippie-luxe, maybe 60s glam, Parisian, Moroccan, island-inspired… whatever the case, I hope there is something in it for most. Something that moves them, touches them, lifts their spirits.

:: What is your favorite NYC place? MOMA. I think there is so much inspiration and adeptness in any kind of art. I love the idea of the presence of an artist in their work and how that translates. MOMA is so extraordinary in their choice of exhibitions and I feel like they really bring modern art to the forefront and create a real sense of energy, interest and a real leadership sensibility.

:: Do you think New York can still be considered the place-to-be for young creatives? I think creativeness is inside. Whether someone is in NYC or the mountains of Colorado. I think there is a vision and a drive and a momentum that is found inside first and foremost.

:: Where do you shop in NYC? I can spend hours in NYC in every type of shopping environment. The hustle and bustle of streets shops, the quietude of others. I have a love for high heels, sandals and bags. Pretty things, nicely made things. Fashion that is somehow thoughtful and thought through. Right now, I most adore the Far West Village. And always, Chelsea Market.

:: If I say Italy, you say…? Yes please.

Ecco il mio breve corso semiserio per sopravvivere a New York nei prosismi mesi estivi.

1. Non fate gli italiani. Per quanto possa essere possibile, sia chiaro. Siate discreti. Non siate arroganti con nessuno, tantomeno con il venditore di hotdog dell’angolo. Fate uscire le persone dal vagone della metro, prima di salire – e fate sedere prima le donne e gli anziani. Non litigate con il vostro fidanzato perché non vi ha scattato bene la foto sul tetto dell’Empire. Non urlate e gesticolate da una parte all’altra di un megastore indicando a vostra cugina che il colore di scarpe che ha scelto non vi piace (non dite che non lo fate, vi ho visti più volte!). E non fate commenti acidi e snob sugli altri italiani a New York: ce ne sono effettivamente tantissimi, e capiscono perfettamente la vostra lingua.

2. Destra / Sinistra. Rispettate i segnali, soprattutto sui ponti percorribili a piedi: da una parte i pedoni, dall’altra i ciclisti. Idem sulle scale mobili: tenete la destra, in fila indiana, così chi ha fretta può superarvi. New York non è un parco giochi a cielo aperto, ma una città dove le persone (tante persone) vivono e lavorano. Non fermatevi in mezzo alla strada con la vostra super mappa, peggio ancora all’entrata della metropolitana. Dimenticavo: NON tagliate MAI le code (si, anche questo lo fanno solo gli italiani): ci sarà un motivo perché le fanno, o sono tutte scemi questi americani?

3. Il costo dell’acqua. Se una bottiglietta d’acqua costa più di 1 dollaro e mezzo, allora vi stanno per fregare. Rifiutatevi di pagare di più: sarà il venditore stesso ad abbassare spontaneamente il prezzo. Questo vale per tutto: non cadete nelle trappole per turisti. Le discutibili magliette I (cuore) New York a Times Square costano 10 dollari l’una. A Chinatown ve ne danno 10 per la stessa cifra. Se qualcuno vi avvicina e vi offre biglietti per spettacoli di Broadway scontati, rifiutate a priori.

4. Sui click inutili. E’ vero che oggi tutti abbiamo una macchinetta digitale e possiamo portare a casa 2/4/8 GB di ricordi, ma qual è il senso di fotografare un dipinto famoso? O quel palazzo? O la Statua della Libertà in tutte le angolazioni? Siate creativi, osate! Piccolo appunto: New York non solo non è un parco giochi, ma non è nemmeno uno zoo (penso che anche gli scoiattoli si siano rotti le scatole di essere avvicinati con un pezzo di carta e trattati da idioti). Non fotografate il giapponese che vi taglia il pesce sotto il naso, chiedete prima gentilmente se potete farlo. Ogni volta che scattate una foto, pensate ai vostri amici e parenti – su Facebook o sul divano di casa – abbiate pietà!

5. Brooklyn c’è. Non sottovalutate nessun quartiere (e viceversa, non sopravvalutatene altri – inter nos – ma chissenefrega dell’Upper West / East Side!) e non fatevi ingannare da pregiudizi o qualche “mio zio mi ha detto che“. Forse vostro zio è stato cinque o sei anni fa. Oggi Harlem è una perla nera che incorona Central Park, e la zona di Williamsburg sta diventando la nuova Little Manhattan. Portate anche lo zio a vedere il panorama!

6. Bleah! Nessun ristoratore newyorkese ha la pretesa di farvi bere il miglior caffè italiano o farvi assaggiare la miglior pizza napoletana (anche se qualche indirizzo merita davvero). Non aspettatevi da nessuna parte il vero espresso: il caffè, in molti posti, è comunque davvero ottimo. Ci sono centinaia di cucine internazionali diverse, riuscirete a resistere dieci giorni senza lamentarvi che non ci sono le tagliatelle al ragù come quelle della nonna oppure che quel caffè è troppo annacquato?

7. Evitate l’Italia. Non buttatevi su negozi o catene di marchi italiani. Non fatevi prendere dalla smania del cambio euro dollaro, perché oltre a non essere più poi così tanto vantaggioso, dovrete calcolare anche le tasse sopra il prezzo esposto. Alla fine andate a spendere uguale. Preferite marchi che non trovate in Italia (ripeto! vi ho visti da Foot Locker e da Prada, non negate!). Le tartarughe palestrate dei modelli di Abercrombie & Fitch sono davvero da vedere e toccare con mano, ma i vestiti li trovate anche a Milano ormai.

8. NO iPhone. Sono certa che ai commessi viene distribuito ogni lunedì un libricino aggiornato su “Come spiegare ad un italiano che non può comprare un iPhone qui“. Una volta per tutte: l’iPhone negli Apple Store, se siete italiani, non potete comprarlo. Mettetevi il cuore in pace, non fatene un’ossessione. Se ne trovate, portatevi a casa un iPad, così il vostro collega morirà d’invidia per due settimane al vostro ritorno e non sentirete più la necessità dell’iPhone per un po’.

::Why and when did you started It’s a stitch? A little over a year ago, I was working full-time as Preschool teacher in my home-state of Maryland. I absolutely loved my job, but I found that a big part of my life was missing: creativity. I remembered hear about Etsy from a very good friend of mine, and decided to try it out. I launched my metal jewelry line, knowing I wanted to branch out in the future. After creating my jewelry for a while, I took up a second art – embroidery. I absolutely adore both mediums! I love that I create things for people and their walls to wear. Just recently, my boyfriend and I decided to move up to New York City (we’ve been here since February 2010) with our kitty Banjo. We’re both city-folk at heart, and really wanted to, “go big or go home”, so here we are! I don’t think we will be here forever, but we are loving it right now.

:: Where do you get your inspiration from? It’s no secret to anyone that even slightly knows me: I am a huge geek, a definition that I totally embrace. I know there are millions of other geeks out there who want cool things for their house (and their jewelry box), so I let that speak to me. If I know anything about geeks it’s this: they are a passionate group; I always design with them in mind.

:: Who is your ideal buyer? Anyone who wants to buy! My customers are absolutely awesome, and range from little girls to their grandmas, and I love that my items can speak out to that many people. Plus, anyone who can appreciate artists hand-making goods is cool in my book.

:: What is your favorite NYC place? I have so much to still see here, being a recent transplant. I must admit, I am a major foodie, so I love checking out new and new-to-me restaurants, corner bakeries and mom-and-pop shops. Since there are people from, literally, all corners of the world, you could eat something new for each day in a year. The food in this city is incomparable!

:: Do you think New York can still be considered the place-to-be for young creatives? Well… I moved here, didn’t I?LOL. But I absolutely think this is the place to be for young artists! This city is full of energy, inspiration, history and all around excitement. It’s a wonderful place to experience, especially in your youth.

:: Where do you shop in NYC? Anywhere that suits my style, I don’t really have a favorite spot. I live in Brooklyn and there are so many little shops, thrift stores and boutiques that shopping is endless, and won’t completely drain my back account like shopping in Manhattan would!

:: If I say Italy, you say…? Yes, please! Italy is #1 on my places to visit. I always say, if I ever get rich and famous, I’m just going to travel the world, immerse myself in other’s cultures (and their food!), and truly see the Earth and it’s people in all it’s awesome glory. If I ever get to that point – Italy is going to be my first stop.

Non so se è vero per ogni donna, ma di certo è vero per New York.

Non puoi dire di conoscere New York finchè non ci hai fatto shopping.

Ok, il Met è imperdibile e il MoMA è davvero una perla per gli amanti di avanguardie e design; Central Park non ha eguali e tutti noi ci siamo trovati a sorridere come ebeti aspettando il “click” dalla cima dell’Empire.

Ma New York ha bisogno di essere esplorata, ribaltata, sviscerata, setacciata in ogni suo angolo; New York va vissuta tra le vie.

E credetemi, non c’è modo migliore che dimenticare la cartina a casa, infilarsi in una T-shirt oversize da battaglia, e perdersi nell’infinito boulevard di negozi e negozietti che popolano la City.

A questo punto la domanda sorge spontanea: quanto siamo disposti a spendere? In una città come New York è indispensabile fissare un budget, se non altro per l’incredibile sensazione che ci attraverserà quando immancabilmente lo sorpasseremo ripetendo a noi stesse che dopotutto ci avremmo rimesso a NON comprare quella meraviglia ad un prezzo così basso.

Una volta inforcati gli occhialoni XL anche se del sole non ce n’è ombra, fissato il budget che aumenterà in maniera proporzionale all’assenza di genitori/fidanzati nei paraggi, e infilata la T-shirt piu’ comoda che il tuo armadio offre, sei pronta a scendere in campo.

Iniziamo da Reed Space, nel Lower East Side – 151 Orchard Street. Magliette, portachiavi, occhiali: i design sono accattivanti ed i concept realmente originali. Sempre nel Lower East Side, potreste provare ad entrare da Some Odd Rubies, sempre al 151 – ma questa volta di Ludlow Street. Lo riconoscerete dalla vetrina rosa intenso: tantissimi vestiti vintage e pezzi di simil modernariato.

Spostiamoci ora a Brooklyn, Carrols Garden (fermata F o G) al 333 di Smith Street. Retrospect, recensito anche dal New York Times, vende invece oggettistica d’altri tempi, tra cui statuine religiose (e non) di resina assai discutibili. Non sia mai però che dobbiate far felice la vostra vecchia zia!

Tutt’altro genere da Flight Club con scarpe da ginnastica di marca per tutti i gusti. I negozi sono tre, 120 Nassau – 254 Greene – 267 Lafayette Street.

A Soho, 477 Broadway, non potete perdere il Pearl River Mart. Negozio cinese di lusso immenso su due piani (più uno rialzato). Tessuti, statue, vasi, sandali, bandierine, dragoni di carta, servizi per il the, bacchette: qualsiasi cosa vi venga in mente. E’ molto curato e merita una visita a prescindere, almeno per la grande fontana a muro all’interno.

Andiamo nel Queens adesso, da Site – 34th avenue, Astoria. Qui gli oggetti di design la fanno da padrona, e sono anche più belli ed originali di quelli che potreste trovare al Moma Design Store.

Se invece siete appassionati di fumetti, allora fuggite su Desert Island, a Brooklyn – 540 Metropolitan Avenue.

In the frenzy typical of NYC, she managed to create a world in where everything is at place, frugal, mild and therefore even more beautiful.

:: Why and when did you started Corduroy? Corduroy started in the fall of 2007. I’m also a photographer and was shooting a lot at the time and not taking time to make things with my hands. So Corduroy was a fun way for me to get myself to take time draw, paint, screen-print, and to connect with others and get my work out there.

:: Where do you get your inspiration from? My inspiration can really come from almost anywhere, but some common things that get me going are animals, colors, patterns, nature, the city, and struggles.. Some days I just wake up excited to work, so I get my materials, go sit someplace, and let the process begin. I’m very process oriented, so many times I’ll only draw a bit of the thing I’m inspired by, and let the work take off from there. When inspiration is nowhere to be found, just try to start working anyhow, scribbling little things with no particular ideas or goal in mind, until something good comes out.

:: Who is your ideal buyer? I think art is (or should be) really personal, and I’d like mine to be bought by someone who loves it like a friend and really gets something out of it. I have so many random pieces that may not mean much to anyone else but are really special to me. I love to surround myself with them like a pack of pals that keep me feeling strong and happy. I hope my pieces can get this kind of reaction to those who buy them too.

:: What is your favorite NYC place? I live in Brooklyn and love it dearly, so my fav spots are basically all located there. I like to get tea or Stumptown coffee at Breukelen Coffee (they also make the best hot chocolate in town) and go sit in Prospect Park to draw or read if it’s nice out. Walk down to Blue Apron and get some cheese and good bread for lunch. When I head to the city I almost never miss a chance to check the MoMA, get some great espresso at Zibetto on 6th Ave on the way, and hightail it out of Manhattan. I also like Williamsburg a lot, there are tons of great diners where to eat and then I love to  have a Guinness and a Fernet at my favorite bar, Maracuja on Grand St. Williamsburg is full of things to do and see too: most of the times I also stop by Cinders Gallery to see what’s new; then I get something good to read at Spoonbill and Sugartown; and then –maybe- I go see a band at Zebulon before heading back to Crown Heights. When I do that, I usually end my day by getting a late night snack at one of the fine Caribbean places on Franklin Ave on the way home. As you can see, I can make a good day by heading to some of my everyday favorite places…

:: Do you think New York can still be considered the place-to-be for young creatives? Definitely! There’s so much freedom for creatives in NYC, and so much beauty and life to be experienced.  But the city can also step all over you and make you feel trampled and alone. I think it’s important not to build it up into something it’s not- every place is what you make it. So if young creatives can do their best to stay grounded and focused while taking advantage of all the amazing people, opportunities, and inspirations around them, I think it’s a place unlike any other for building a life as an artist. My advice? Be always patient and open.

:: Where do you shop in NYC? I don’t do a lot of shopping, but when I do it’s mostly for food and art supplies. I’m lucky to live a few blocks from the Saturday Farmer’s Market at Grand Army Plaza and I can blow through some serious cash on fresh produce and cheese there. The Brooklyn Flea Market is always great. And Williamsburg has many cute shops for anything you want. I also love the Pearl art supply store on Canal St. and can spend a lot of time there.

:: If I say Italy, you say…? Food! Wine! Beauty. Though I have not been. I hope to go next year, and welcome suggestions from any of your readers on where I can find their favorite food, wine, and beauty.

E’ cosa nota e universalmente riconosciuta che molte donne, quando hanno il morale a terra, si consolano con lo shopping. Le statistiche confermano che provare capi nuovi di zecca, scegliere il colore dello smalto e infilare il piede in una decoltè fiammante, ci riempie di soddisfazione temporanea, agendo come cura antistress.
Personalmente sono una grande sostenitrice dello shopping terapeutico e sono qui proprio per indirizzare le donne nel posto migliore per un effetto assicurato!
Si chiama Victoria’s Secret e a New York ci sono ben 6 punti vendita. La prima volta che sono entrata nello store tra la 34East e 57th Street, non ho visto la luce del sole per circa due ore rendendomi conto di aver trovato finalmente il “Paradiso delle Donne”. E’ l’unica volta che un negozio mi fa un effetto tanto intenso, sarà che ho un debole per la biancheria intima…
Pareti rosa Big Babol, musica soft, commesse belle e cordiali, tavoli in cristallo interamente ricoperti di slip morbidi e colorati, completini intimi e baby-doll che sembrano fatti di zucchero.
Ma non finisce qui. Al piano superiore c’è un intero reparto dedicato alla biancheria da notte -pigiamoni compresi- un reparto beach style con costumi, asciugamani e teli mare, e i camerini prova che sono tutto un programma: piccoli salotti con moquette e divano che puoi occupare per ore, considerando che le commesse ti passano interi cassetti di biancheria da provare.
Dirigendosi verso le casse con la shopping bag straripante, si viene investiti da una brezza di profumi dolcissimi che devia inevitabilmente il nostro percorso verso il reparto Beauty & Care. Esistono creme idratanti, setificanti, tirabaci e addirittura afrodisiache per notti indimenticabili con il tuo lui.
Qualcuno disse che basta indossare buona biancheria intima per sentirsi sempre a proprio agio con qualsiasi capo d’abbigliamento, io invece dico che mi basta stare una mezz’oretta nel camerino di Victoria’s Secret a provare wonder-bra per sentirmi meglio.

Ecco un estratto!

Sono veramente poche le città in cui andrei ad abitare e fra queste c’è sicuramente New York, la città che non dorme mai. Purtroppo non l’ho mai visitata e spero di farlo prossimamente perché oltre ad essere piena di musei, grattacieli e interessanti posti da visitare, è anche ricca di negozi e centri commerciali. Ecco la lista dei negozi che se andate a New York non potete assolutamente non visitare!

Se capitate nelle parti di Madison, Broadway e Soho andate a fare un giro da Banana Republic sulla 2360 Broadway, famosissimo store americano che vende capi e accessori casual e urban sporty, American Eagle sulla 575 Broadway, altro famoso store americano urban sporty, Old navy sulla 503 Broadway, negozio sportivo modaiolo giovane ed economico. Kmart, sulla 770 Broadway, negozio particolarissimo che merita di certo un’occhiata.
