Sanfransisco: I live here: SF

Prima di trasferirsi a San Francisco, Julie Michelle non avrebbe mai pensato di diventare una fotografa. La sua passione – oggi diventata un vero e proprio lavoro – è cresciuta solo di recente, insieme all’amore per la sua nuova città e a I live here: SF, un progetto nato dal desiderio di raccontare San Francisco per mezzo delle esperienze e dei volti di chi la vive quotidianamente. Da due anni a questa parte, Julie si dedica a fotografare qualunque suo concittadino voglia offrirsi per un ritratto; a ogni soggetto viene chiesto di scegliere un luogo della città in cui ambientare gli scatti e di raccontare a parole – con un racconto o una poesia – la propria visione di San Francisco. Il risultato è un sito web ricco di colori e storie, una mostra in apertura al SOMArts Cultural Center e un racconto complesso, originale ed emozionante della vita nella city by the bay.

:: Innanzitutto puoi raccontarci un po’ di I live here: SF, di come è nato e si è sviluppato nel tempo?

All’inizio questo progetto non era miei piani. Volevo solo fare un po’ di esperienza nel campo del ritratto, perché fino a quel momento non avevo mai fotografato persone, e proprio mentre ero alla ricerca di soggetti ho conosciuto la proprietaria di un piccolo negozio di alimentari qui a San Francisco, una donna originaria dello Yemen. La nostra conversazione – come quella di due sconosciuti che subito si sentono amici – è stata così memorabile che ho deciso di pubblicarla sul mio blog, insieme ad alcune foto che le avevo scattato. Non avevo mai chiesto a uno sconosciuto il permesso di fotografarlo; è stata davvero la prima volta per me. Il mio post ha avuto successo e molte persone mi hanno scritto per consigliarmi di continuare a raccontare le storie degli abitanti di San Francisco. È così che è iniziato tutto, con molta naturalezza, perché le persone amano parlare di questa città e del perché vivono qui. Non avrei mai immaginato che il mio sito sarebbe diventato qualcosa di più di un semplice progetto per me stessa, nato per imparare come guardare le persone e catturarne la natura con una foto. Sono davvero grata per l’accoglienza incredibile e inaspettata che San Francisco ha dato al il mio lavoro, che credo sia indicativa dell’entusiasmo che questa città nutre nei confronti dei progetti creativi in generale. Anche sul mio sito internet si percepisce un grande senso di apertura, che ha permesso la costruzione di un’incredibile raccolta di storie diverse, molte delle quali sono estremamente belle, reali e sentite. Spesso mi sento più coinvolta da ciò che i miei soggetti scrivono rispetto alle foto che io scatto loro.

:: Can you tell us something about I live here: SF, about the reasons why you started this project and how it developed since the very beginning? This project wasn’t something I intentionally planned in the beginning. I had wanted to get more experience with portraiture, as up until that time, I had not ever taken photos of people. At the same time I was thinking about how to get people to photograph for my own education, I had encountered a local shopkeeper, a woman from Yemen who owned a small grocery store. We had such a wonderful conversation–two strangers but soon felt like friends–that I wrote about it on my blog, with some photos I had taken of her. I had never asked a stranger if I could take their picture before; that was a first for me. The blog post I wrote was popular and I had several people send me emails telling me that I should do more with San Franciscans and their stories.

So that’s how it started. People in San Francisco like to talk about the city and why they live here, so the story comes naturally. I really had no idea that this site would turn into anything more than just a personal project. It always was a way for me to teach myself how to see people and capture them in a photograph. The enthusiasm that this city has had for my work has been incredible and completely unexpected. But I am truly grateful. I think the receptiveness of San Franciscans to my project is indicative of a general enthusiasm the city has for creative projects. There is a feeling of openness on the site that has also created an incredible array of stories; some of the stories that people choose to share on this site are incredibly beautiful, real and heartfelt. Oftentimes I’m more drawn to the stories that my subjects write than the photos I take of them.

:: Questo progetto ti ha permesso di imparare qualcosa di nuovo su San Francisco e i suoi abitanti?

Imparo costantemente cose nuove su San Francisco – dal punto di vista storico, architettonico, politico – e sono davvero riconoscente verso chi condivide con me la propria visione di questa città. Dopo aver conosciuto nuove persone per quasi due anni, fotografandole e passeggiando insieme a loro per I live: SF, posso dire di aver esplorato molto. San Francisco è una città piena di passaggi, scalinate e stradine nascoste. Le persone che conoscono bene i loro quartieri sono felici di mostrarne i segreti e io traggo costantemente beneficio dalla loro esperienza. Mi piacciono in modo particolare quei tetti, quelle scale antincendio e quei balconi che regalano una vista speciale, che gran parte delle persone non conosce, sull’intera città.

Il più grande insegnamento che ho ricevuto rimane comunque la passione che chi si offre a collaborare al mio progetto prova nei confronti di San Francisco. È ciò che ci accomuna tutti: le persone amano e disprezzano questo posto sempre intensamente, e non arrivano mai ad abitare qui per caso. C’è come una forza misteriosa che le porta in questa città, mentre le persone nate a San Francisco sono molto orgogliose della loro provenienza ed estremamente legate alle loro origini. Direi che la sensazione travolgente che prova chi abita qui è quella di poter essere se stessi e di appartenere a questa città. È qualcosa che mi viene detto spesso e che capisco, perché anch’io mi sento così.

:: Did I live here: SF help you to learn something new about San Francisco and its residents? Can you share it with us? I learn new things about San Francisco constantly–from history to architecture to politics– and I’m so grateful that people are excited to share their own personal San Francisco with me. After almost two years of meeting people and taking their photos and walking around the city with them for I Live Here:SF, I’ve covered a lot of ground. But San Francisco is a dense city and has a lot of hidden walkways, stairways, alleys. People who know their neighborhoods quite well are happy to share the secrets that most people would not see, so I constantly benefit from their experience. I especially like getting access to rooftops, fire escapes and balconies as those provide special views of the city that most people would not see.

What I’ve learned most of all is that the people who volunteer to participate in my project are very passionate about San Francisco. That is a common thread that ties us together. People have intense loves and dislikes in this place, and people don’t come to live in San Francisco by accident. They are compelled to live here, are drawn here by some outside force. The people who were born here are very proud of their city and feel a special bond as native San Franciscans. I would say that the overwhelming feeling people have is that they can be themselves here, that this is a city where they feel like they belong. I hear that constantly, and I understand what they mean because I feel the same way.

:: Qual è invece la tua storia come abitante di San Francisco? In che modo vivere qui ti ispira e ti influenza, come artista e non solo?

La mia è la tipica storia di chi si trasferisce qui. Sono cresciuta a San Jose, circa un’ora a sud di San Francisco. Ho visitato questa città varie volte sin da quando avevo sei anni ma mi sono trasferita qui solo quattro anni fa e posso dire sinceramente che la mia vita è totalmente cambiata da allora. Innanzitutto, prima non mi sarei mai e poi mai definita un’artista; in effetti, anche se molti non ci credono, non possedevo neanche una macchina fotografica e non avevo mai lontanamente pensato di dedicarmi alla fotografia! Il fatto è che quando mi sono trasferita a San Francisco ho improvvisamente iniziato a prestare più attenzione a ciò che avevo intorno e ad ammirare tutto nel più piccolo dettaglio. Ai miei occhi tutto sembrava far parte di una fotografia ed è per questo che ho pensato di comprare una macchina fotografica. Dopo averla acquistata non mi sono più fermata; la portavo ovunque solo per esercitarmi. Dopo il mio primo scatto, che risale ad Aprile del 2008, ho fatto migliaia e migliaia di foto. Questa città mi insegna come osservare. So che non sarei mai diventata una fotografa se non mi fossi trasferita qui.

:: What is your story as a San Francisco resident? How does living in San Francisco inspire and influence you, not only as an artist? My story is a typical one as a newcomer. I grew up in San Jose, about an hour south of here. I’ve been coming to visit San Francisco since I was 6 years old, but only moved here about four years ago. I can honestly say that my life has changed completely since I’ve been here. For one thing, I would have never even considered myself an artist. In fact, I did not even own a camera! Most people don’t believe me when I say that, but it’s true. I didn’t own a camera, never gave a thought about photography, until I moved here. Once I started living here, all of a sudden I was so much more aware of my surroundings. I was constantly in admiration of something, even the tiniest detail. Everything looked like a picture to me, and that’s when I thought it was time to get a camera.

Once I got my camera, I was unstoppable. I took it everywhere with me, and just trained myself. I’ve taken thousands and thousands of pictures since that first photo in April 2008. The city teaches me how to see, how to be a photographer. I wouldn’t be a photographer if I hadn’t come to live here.

:: E se ci fossi tu dall’altra parte della macchina fotografica, dove ti piacerebbe farti immortalare?

In realtà si tratta di qualcosa che spero di non fare per un po’ di tempo, perché come molti fotografi odio venire immortalata. Lo evito a tutti i costi, ma se dovessi partecipare al mio stesso progetto – potrebbe succedere un giorno, chi lo sa? – mi piacerebbe essere ritratta al Golden Gate Park. È un posto magico per me e, nonostante lo visiti spesso, mi riserva sempre sorprese. Giardini nascosti, sentieri, laghi. Dentro ci sono il Giardino Botanico, il giardino delle rose, delle fuchsie e delle dalie, il National AIDS Memorial Grove, una meravigliosa serra e due musei. E un vero mulino a vento olandese! Il parco è l’anima di San Francisco, per me. La mattina quando fa freddo e c’è nebbia è tutto così rilassante e bello, mentre quando c’è il sole il parco è pieno di musica e di vita, tanto che ti senti riconoscente per il solo fatto di potervi passeggiare.

:: If you were on the other side of the camera, where would you like to be photographed in San Francisco? I plan NOT to be on the other side of the camera for quite some time. Like many photographers, I hate having my picture taken. I avoid it at all costs. But if I were to participate in my own project, which may happen someday, who knows?– I would have my pictures taken at Golden Gate Park. The park, to me, is a magical place. I live close by it so can visit it often, but it’s full of surprises. Hidden gardens, paths, lakes. It has the Botanical Gardens, and the rose and fuschia and dahlia gardens, and the lovely National AIDS Memorial Grove, and of course the wonderful Conservatory of Flowers and the two museums. And the Dutch windmill! We even have a real windmill. To me, the park is the soul of San Francisco. In the morning when it’s chilly and foggy and quiet, it’s calming and beautiful, and when it’s sunny and full of music and life, it makes you grateful just to be able to walk through it.

:: La tua mostra sarà inaugurata il 5 Novembre al SOMArts Cultural Center: come verrà esposto e presentato I live here: SF in un contesto del genere?

Questa retrospettiva è per me un grande passo, un’evoluzione che mi emoziona molto. È la prima volta che i ritratti e le storie di I live here: SF escono da Internet per arrivare sulle pareti di una galleria d’arte. Il risultato in assoluto più incredibile di questo progetto sono le relazioni interpersonali che ho avuto modo di creare con tante persone generose e interessanti. Vorrei che questa mostra riuscisse a onorarle. Non si tratta solo di me e del mio lavoro, ma di una comunità di cittadini che, da ogni parte della città, sono venuti da me per condividere se stessi con gli altri. Avere un luogo grande abbastanza per mostrare i loro volti e le loro storie, e per farli incontrare uno con l’altro, è per me un bellissimo regalo. Sono così eccitata all’idea di avere tutti i meravigliosi soggetti delle mie foto riuniti in una grande stanza, di vederli conoscersi e fare amicizia… non vedo l’ora che arrivi quel momento.

:: You have a retrospective opening Nov. 5 at the SOMArts Cultural Center: how will I live here: SF be displayed and presented in such context? This retrospective is a huge step for me, and a very exciting development. This will be the first time that the portraits and stories will come off of the internet and onto the walls of a gallery. To me, what’s been the most heartwarming and incredible outcome of this project are the interpersonal connections I’ve made with so many generous and interesting people. I want this show to celebrate them. It’s not about me and what I’ve done, but about a community of people who have come to me from all parts of the city to share themselves with others. So having a space that’s large enough to feature their faces and stories, and give them room to meet each other, is an incredible gift to me. I am so thrilled at the prospect of having these wonderful photo subjects together in one giant room, meeting each other and making new friendships and connections… I can hardly wait for that moment.

La fase di creazione della mostra è stata molto intensa. Volevo che tutti i partecipanti al progetto avessero il loro spazio nella galleria, quindi era necessario che questa contenesse più di 180 ritratti. Ammetto che la parte logistica dell’istallazione è stata piuttosto scoraggiante, e sono fortunata ad essermi affidata all’esperienza del curatore e dello staff del SOMArts, tutti estremamente entusiasti e di sostegno nei confronti del mio progetto. La mostra avrà diversi aspetti, che spero riusciranno a incuriosire ed emozionare chi verrà a vederla: innanzitutto a fianco dei ritratti verranno esposti alcuni racconti selezionati e stampati in grande formato. Inoltre, gli enti comunali ci hanno generosamente donato una sorta di “arredamento urbano”, vere e proprie parti della città che verranno istallate per dare alle persone l’idea di camminare in una San Francisco racchiusa tra le pareti della galleria. Ho anche collaborato con due artisti, che hanno arricchito l’esposizione con elementi di connessione tra le storie e con una dimensione storica. A Chris Rusak, che ha una grande esperienza nel campo della tipografia, ho chiesto di trovare un modo per legare le storie dal punto di vista strettamente testuale e interpretativo. Credo che le persone troveranno il suo lavoro molto interessante. Rick Prelinger è invece un archivista cinematografico, molto celebre per i suoi montaggi di una raccolta di film senza autore riconosciuto, che lui chiama “I paesaggi perduti di San Francisco”: credo descrivano molto bene com’era la città – nella sua essenza e nelle sue diverse manifestazioni – al momento in cui sono stati girati, quindi anche i video di Rick verranno mostrati all’interno della galleria. Sono contenta che questa mostra unisca insieme tanti aspetti così interessanti: ritratti, racconti, parole, storia, video, oggetti, in grado di riportarci San Francisco in tanti modi diversi.

The actual creation of the show has been intense. I wanted everyone who had ever participated to have some presence in the gallery so now the show will encompass over 180 portraits. So the logistics of installing this show is daunting, I will admit. I am fortunate that the curator and staff at SOMArts has been incredibly supportive and enthusiastic of this entire project, so I know I am in good hands with their experience and their vision. The show will have several facets that I hope will be intriguing and exciting to the people who visit the show. Besides the portraits, we will be displaying selected stories in large format prints. Also, city agencies have been very generous in donating “urban furniture,” actual parts of the city, that will be installed in the gallery. I wanted people to have a real sense of San Francisco within the gallery walls. 

Also I have brought two collaborating artists into the show who will add an extra dimension of connectedness and history. Chris Rusak is an artist who works a great deal with typefaces, letters and words. I wanted him to find a way to use the stories of the subjects in a strictly interpretive and text-based way, and his vision and concept for that process has been very revealing. I think people will find his correlations and connections quite interesting. Rick Prelinger, a film archivist, is well-known for his montages of collected ephemeral films that he calls “Lost Landscapes of San Francisco.” His films capture the essence and many manifestations of San Francisco for as long as people have filmed it and his video will be showing in the gallery as well.

I’m glad that the show will be bringing a variety of compelling and interesting facets together: portraits, stories, words, history, video, physical artifacts, to reflect San Francisco back to us in many different ways.

:: Nel futuro continuerai a raccontare le storie degli abitanti di San Francisco? Stai lavorando ad altri progetti in questo momento?

Nell’immediato futuro continuerò sicuramente a dedicarmi a I Live Here:SF. Conoscere nuove persone e scoprire come si possano raggiungere contemporaneamente obiettivi sia personali che comuni mi regala immensa gioia. Incontrare gli altri nel mio lavoro è stata un’esperienza che mi ha cambiato la vita. In effetti, ora che il mio obiettivo di imparare a scattare ritratti è decisamente a buon punto (per quanto non credo sia possibile padroneggiare completamente questo tipo di fotografia ora ho sicuramente molta più esperienza!), ho altri progetti che mi piacerebbe realizzare.

Quelli a cui sto pensando includeranno, insieme alla fotografia, un elemento scritto ancora più preponderante, mentre altri due hanno temi definiti, già emersi nelle mie foto, legati alla religione e alla realizzazione personale. Presto dedicherò loro spazio in iniziative separate da I Live Here: SF, molto più personali. Non vedo l’ora di poter sviluppare meglio tutto questo quando la mia mostra si concluderà, alla fine di Novembre. Non so dove arriverò, ma ho imparato che facendo ciò che si ama e facendolo dove porta il cuore le cose semplicemente succederanno da sole, al momento giusto.

:: Talking about the future, will you keep on telling stories about San Francisco residents? Are you working (or planning to work) on some other projects? Yes! I will be continuing I Live Here:SF for the foreseeable future. It gives me so much joy, in meeting people and discovering such a wealth of individuality and common purpose at the same time. It’s been a life changing experience to encounter so many people in my work. I do have some other projects I want to pursue, now that my initial goal of learning portraiture is well under way (I doubt one ever masters such a subject, but I’ve certainly got a lot more experience now!). 

The projects I have been thinking about will include more writing in conjunction with my photography, and two other projects have definite themes based on religion and self-realization. These themes have already manifested themselves in the other photography that I do and it will be time soon to give those elements room to be seen. They will be separate projects from I Live Here:SF, and much more personal ones. I’m looking forward to starting to develop them after this show closes at the end of November. I don’t know where these projects will take me, but what I’ve learned is just to do what you love and where your heart takes you, and then things will just happen of their own accord, when the time is right.
