Today in New York: Ryan McAbary

Ryan McAbery has been a working artist for just over 9 years.  She started out as a professional bookbinder but has changed course a few times over the years, from jewelry design to her new found passion,  photography.  She lives and works in the Pacific Northwest and has a small and messy studio which has it’s own wood stove and big windows, perfect for watching the rain.  She sells her work locally at the Portland Saturday Market and has national and international retail shops, her work is carried worldwide. She is also truly in love with New York, a city she visited and enjoied a few times…

:: Why and when did you start Little Put Books?
I started Littleput Books after my son was born.  I opened up a small bookbinding business from my home as a way to be a working Stay at Home Mom.  My first product was a small hand folded accordion book, a littleput book.  They found quick success and encouraged me to keep growing and expanding.  Starting my own business was a great career choice.

:: Where do you get your inspiration from? I live in gorgeous Oregon, and now my business is focused primarily around photography: my inspiration mostly comes from escaping the city and hiking in the woods. Being surrounded by beautiful makes my job easy!

:: Who is your ideal buyer? The person who is really excited about my work and feels like they’ve gotten something special when my package arrives.

:: What is your favorite NYC place? I’ve only been twice, to Manhattan and Brooklyn. It’s such an exciting city, there is no way to pick one favorite.

:: Do you think New York can still be considered the place-to-be for young creatives? I really do think it is on the pulse of the next big thing. So much of what happens in design originates from NYC.

:: Where do you shop in NYC? That’s easy: everywhere!

:: If I say Italy, you say…? Pizza, that or cute guys with awesome accents, do I really have to choose?
