Today in New York: Diane Tider

3 July 2010

Diane Tider loves spending the springtime in New York since on weekends the city is packed with tons of flea markets and craft fairs. They are still going on during the summer, but as many New Yorkers are away and it can get very hot, the spring is the “it” season.  Diane especially suggests to visit the Renegade Fair (a very popular one held once a year in Brooklyn), the BUST Craftacular, Brooklyn Flea, and the Hester Street Fair.

Why is she so informed about fairs and fleas? Well, that’s ’cause she is yet another amazing crafter I found through Etsy. And her brand, Tider Design, is for sure not to be missed.

::  Why and when did you started Tider Design? I began Tider Design several years ago while I was between jobs and had some time on my hands. I’d been studying jewelry design and had done quite a bit on my own, and my enthusiastic and dear friends convinced me I should be selling my work, too.

::  Where do you get your inspiration from? Much of my work is rooted in nature; I’ve always been an avid beachcomber, I just can’t walk past a beautiful shell.  I’m also enamored with vivid colors, and have become more so since I began working with enamels.

:: Who is your ideal buyer? Anyone with an appreciation for something a bit experimental or unusual.  At art markets, people often comment that my style is quite broad.  I make jewelry because I’m curious and love to learn about different media, so I like to think I’ve got something for everyone.

:: What is your favorite NYC place? One place that comes to mind is the flower district; a whole block filled with colors, textures, shapes and smells. I think for similar reasons, I also love Chinatown.

:: Do you think New York can still be considered the place-to-be for young creatives? Absolutely.  NYC offers opportunities in so many fields, so many varied and colorful activities and people, I imagine it will always be a gathering place for those looking to take chances and be creative.

:: Where do you shop in NYC? Downtown and Brooklyn (though I occasionally venture north to Bloomingdales).  The spring and summer craft fairs and street sales are always wonderful too – whenever I sell there, I always end up buying from the vendors next to me.

::  If I say Italy, you say…? Delicious!
