Today in New York: Julie Prunier Vecchio

On her website Julie Prunier Vecchio says: “From an idea or a sketch, we can create the jewel of your dream”. And that says it all, as her creations really have some sort of dream-like feeling attached.

Julie is french and she graduated from the Ecole Boulle in Paris, with a specialization in hand ornamental engraving. On her resumé are also a few  engraving and micro sculpture experiences on high-end collectible watches for  companies like Vacheron Constantin, Van Cleef & Arpels and Breguet.

Julie now lives in New York, she is married (and has a baby) with an Italian guy -from Sicily actually- and speaks a little italian too.

Her jewels are sold on the web, and in a shop named Sedona and located in Hoboken where -they say- you can experience the most amazing view of NYC’s skyline.

:: Why and when did you started Prunier Vecchio? I started Prunier Vecchio in the Spring 2009. It has been a year since we arrived to the U.S.A from France with my husband and my 2 year old son, Andrea. Upon my arrival, I soon felt the need to create, to bring myself to a manual project that would allow me to share with others my passion for nature. After working in Switzerland for one of the best hand engraving workshop, engraving other artists’ designs -designs of high complexity yet dull to me- I decided it was time to open my own company: a project which would give me the chance to bring my own visions to life. A project that wouldn’t prevent me from missing on my son’s growth, my own little sapling, and on my own creative call. And that’s how it all began…

:: Where do you get your inspiration from? I’m all about nature. Pure nature, and “Art Nouveau”, which is also highly influenced by nature’s rhythm. More specifically, I’m influenced by two artists : Karl Blossfeldt who, I believe, took the most intimate and amazing picture of plants and Antoni Gaudi, the greatest architect of his time. I come from the Alps, where I used to sit and stare at the mountains for hours, or hike in the forest and where I would record through drawing every bit of my surroundings. Now living here, in New York, I urge a piece of this nature with me, and so I invest time in creations that give me that, pieces that bring me back to such a natural state. And so, everywhere I go, I wear a piece of nature on me…

::Who is your ideal buyer? Lovers. Lovers of art, lovers of nature and lovers of life. Individuals who love contemplating nature, and are passionate about life. My pieces aspire to be a statement of that awe for nature and life.

:: What is your favorite NYC place? Neighborhoods with secret gardens, places where you can contemplate the contrast between nature and the work of Men. The East Village with its community gardens and parks, SoHo or the Meat Packing district where you can walk along the Highline Park and witness the synchronicity of people and their environment. And Central Park, the green heart of the island in its virgin beauty.

:: Do you think New York can still be considered the place-to-be for young creatives? Without a doubt, New York City will always be the most seductive muse for all aspiring artists from every corner of the globe. I think it is the most cosmopolitan city of all, witch makes it The Art platform in the word.

:: Where do you shop in NYC? Any place where I can find spontaneity without frivolity, unique but un-pretentious. I don’t shop much to tell you the truth. I only buy pieces that I consider unique and that I usually find by chance. I have to really fall in love to buy something and then I try to keep it for life. I have started to look on Etsy more when I need to buy presents, you can really find amazing things and really creative people.

:: If I say Italy, you say…? I say the love of my life and best critic I ever had, who always makes me improve myself until I really get satisfied with my designs… I say, or better: dico che i miei suoceri vivono in Sicilia, the only place where you can ski on a volcano, having the mountain smoking behind you and the Mediterranean sea in font of you. I love Italy, for me it is like a museum country…
